Worksheet + answer key
Subtraction with numbers up to 10
Twelve non-negative subtractions, with prompts to connect taking away, difference and checking by addition.
- 12 questions
- Numbers 0–10
- No negative answers
Ready to print. One worksheet, plus an optional answer page.
Match the paper size in the print dialog. Use portrait, turn off browser headers and footers, and check the page count before printing.
Swipe across the sheet if needed. Printing keeps its full size.

Start with a concrete meaning
Every question places the larger number first, so the result is zero or positive. Demonstrate 7 − 3 with seven counters and remove three. Count the four that remain. This is an example to introduce the operation, not a promise that this exact question appears on the sheet.
You can also view subtraction as a difference: compare a group of seven with a group of three and see how many are unmatched. Choose one interpretation first and connect the two later if the learner is ready.
Discuss zero instead of skipping it
Subtracting zero leaves the starting quantity unchanged. Subtracting a number from itself leaves zero. Use a small set of objects to show each case rather than treating either as an exception to memorize.
If a learner counts backwards, check that the first step happens after the starting number. For 6 − 2, saying 6 and then 5 is not two backward steps: the steps are to 5 and then 4. An open number line can make that distinction visible.
Use addition to check
Choose one completed question and add the answer back to the amount removed. For 7 − 3 = 4, checking 4 + 3 = 7 returns to the starting quantity. Keep the answer sheet separate until this check has been attempted.
To prepare more questions in the same range, customize the worksheet, keep Easy and choose a new arrangement. Questions may repeat because the generator samples a small range. That can support practice, but this worksheet should not be treated as a standardized test.
